The Concept
A solo exhibition by Lateefat Tobun, presented as part of a New Year showcase, featuring abstract paintings"Atona" depicting a glowing oil lantern rendered in muted greys and greens, with warm golden light emanating from within the lamp
Atona is a solo exhibition by Lateefat Tobun, opening the year at Arts & Culture Gallery in Abuja and presented as part of a New Year Exhibition running from 4th to 6th January 2022, the show marked an early milestone in Lateefat's practice as an artist.
The work centres on a single, quietly powerful image: an oil lantern, painted in muted greys and greens, glowing from within with warm, golden light. Rendered with loose, atmospheric brushwork, the piece sits in near-darkness with its surroundings barely distinguishable reflecting the lantern's flame as the sole point of warmth and clarity in the frame.
As a New Year exhibition, Atona carries the lantern as a symbol of small, steady light held up against the dark, marking the quiet act of beginning again.
